Can Songs Make AI Click?

Case Study

What if learning about bias or prompting started with a beat?

This case study explores how teaching AI through music can turn complex topics into emotionally engaging learning tools. Using generative tools and narrative design, we created ten bilingual tracks that help listeners connect with AI concepts like empathy gaps, disinformation, and algorithmic bias.

TL;DR - At a Glance

  • Challenge: Can AI-generated songs help people understand AI better?
  • Solution: We created 10 bilingual songs on key AI literacy themes using ChatGPT, Suno, and Udio, and tested their impact on YouTube.
  • Outcome:
    • Emotional songs held attention longest (up to 43.5%)
    • Dutch versions boosted retention
    • Prompting drew clicks but lost focus
    • Ethical topics needed context to connect

Music supports AI education when it's emotional, local, and guided.

Project Snapshot

Songs That Think: A Human-Centred Approach to AI Literacy

We created ten original songs that explore topics such as prompting, algorithmic bias, and synthetic emotion. Each track was released in English and Dutch to widen accessibility and tested on YouTube to measure engagement.

This wasn't just about creativity-it was about cognition. The project demonstrated how music can function as a bridge between abstract AI concepts and real-world understanding.

The Challenge & Context

Making AI Understandable-and Memorable

Many AI lessons rely on technical jargon, leaving learners disengaged. But music activates a different kind of learning-emotional, cultural, and intuitive.

Could a song make a bias feel real? Could a metaphor help someone remember how prompting works?

This project asked: What if learners could connect to AI through story, sound, and surprise-rather than code alone?

Our Approach

From Prompt to Playback

We used:

  • ChatGPT: For lyric creation and concept shaping
  • Suno & Udio: For AI music generation
  • Manual mapping: To align each song with cognitive or ethical themes
  • YouTube analytics: To assess impact through views and retention

Each song tackled a key educational angle-like ethical reflection or technical explanation-and used distinct musical genres (lo-fi, ballad, satire, etc.) to reach diverse audiences.

Outcomes & Insights

💡 Key Findings

  1. Emotion Drives Retention: ERROR 404: Feelings Not Found had 43.5% average view duration-the highest overall. “My students didn't just understand the empathy gap-they felt it.”
  2. Native Language Enhances Learning: Dutch versions had consistently better watch time than English, suggesting native language boosts comprehension-even on global platforms.
  3. Curiosity Isn't Enough: Few-Shot Magic and Whisper to the Machine sparked interest but lost attention quickly. Curiosity draws users in. But it takes emotion to keep them there.
  4. Ethical Themes Need Context: Songs like Truth Crisis underperformed unless accompanied by discussion or annotations. These topics thrive in a supported learning environment.
“A beat gets attention. A metaphor holds it. Emotion makes it stick.”

Turn listening into learning.

The AI Music Annotator is an interactive audio experience that helps users explore key AI concepts while listening to original AI-generated songs. As the track plays, lyrics scroll in sync-highlighting key phrases that you can click to reveal short, meaningful annotations.

Each annotation unpacks:

  • The AI concept behind the lyric
  • Its poetic twist in the song
  • A real-world example to ground understanding

Perfect for classrooms, workshops, or self-paced exploration-on desktop or mobile.

Everything runs in a single lightweight HTML file-no frameworks, no login, no video. Just press play and turn sound into insight.

Discussion & Future Directions

Lessons Learnt

  • Music can effectively activate reflection-but not replace deeper instruction.
  • Emotional storytelling increases retention and connection.
  • Localised and culturally sensitive content boosts understanding.

Next Steps

  • Launching a sample matrix to explore songs by theme, mood, and retention
  • Developing a teacher toolkit with guided classroom activities
  • Exploring lyric annotation tools for deeper engagement
