If Tools Could Talk: What AI Poetry Reveals About Us
Case Study
How short AI-generated poems gave everyday tech a voice-and touched something deeply human.
What happens when Siri writes a breakup poem? Or a printer shares its burnout? This bilingual experiment turned machines into poets-and audiences couldn't look away. With dry humour, lo-fi aesthetics, and emotionally charged performances, these Shorts helped viewers reflect on the emotional lives we project onto technology.

TABLE OF CONTENTS
TL;DR - At a Glance
- Challenge: Could AI-generated poems give digital tools and household objects a poetic voice-and resonate emotionally across cultures?
- Solution: A bilingual spoken-word video series featuring AI-generated poetry from the perspective of devices like Siri, printers, cats, and coffee mugs.
- Outcome: Dutch versions drove stronger engagement; character-driven poems held attention longest; humour and subtle pain proved sticky.
- Key Insight: Viewers didn't just hear poetry-they recognised emotional truths behind the digital tools they use every day.
Project Snapshot
- Title: If X Could Write Poetry
- Format: 6 poetic characters x 2 languages = 12 YouTube Shorts
- Tools Used: ChatGPT (for poetry drafts), human editing, lo-fi voiceovers, minimalist visuals
- Objective: Explore whether AI can co-create emotionally resonant poetry-and how audiences respond across language and culture.
This project reimagined AI as a poetic voice for the overlooked: Siri, a tired printer, your cat, even Instagram. Through tightly written, bilingual spoken-word videos, it aimed not just to entertain, but to provoke reflection on how humans relate to machines-often with more emotion than we admit.
The Challenge & Context
Modern life is steeped in silent technology-from smart speakers to scrolling feeds-but we rarely consider how we “speak” to our tools or what they might “feel.” Could poetry give these non-human actors a voice? Could AI-generated poems, framed with humour and emotion, make us rethink our emotional relationships with tech?
This project was born from two simple but radical questions:
- What if AI wrote poetry as your tools?
- Could those poems reveal something about us?
Our Approach
This wasn't just AI writing poems. It was a carefully guided collaboration-between algorithmic drafts and human storytelling intuition.
Creative Process
- Framing: Prompts like “What if Siri wrote a breakup poem?” or “What would Instagram say about nostalgia?” sparked unique character voices.
- Generation & Editing: ChatGPT produced draft poems, which were shaped by humans for tone, pacing, metaphor, and surprise.
- Translation: Dutch versions weren't literal-they were adapted to preserve rhythm, intimacy, and humour.
- Production: Each Short featured lo-fi narration, minimal motion, and no flashy visuals-allowing voice and text to carry the emotion.
Key Technologies
- ChatGPT (GPT-4) for poetry generation
- Human editing loop for tone and narrative arc
- Manual translation for poetic and cultural fit
- Lo-fi recording for emotional authenticity
- YouTube Shorts for mobile-native delivery
Outcomes & Insights
Despite their simplicity, the videos achieved strong engagement across languages. Dutch versions often had better retention, likely due to local voice and cultural intimacy.
| Language | Click-through rate | Avg view duration | Watch time per view |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dutch | Higher | Longer | More efficient |
| English | Broader reach, lower CTR | Shorter | Strong for emotional pieces |
Top-Performing Characters
- Siri (NL): Highest watch time and CTR
- Siri (EN): Most total views
- Coffee & Cat: Memorable tone and humour in both languages
Sample Poetic Lines
- “You ghosted her... like I ghosted you.” - Siri
- “You only refill me when you need to vent.” - Coffee
- “My tray is jammed. Again. But so is my heart.” - Printer

Compare languages, listen to emotional tones, and reflect on how poetic AI voices reveal our relationships with technology.
Lessons & Reflections
This wasn't just a poetry project. It was digital anthropology in miniature-using AI to surface how we feel about the tools we live with. Key lessons:
- Strong personas hook viewers quickly
- Local language matters for emotional resonance
- Human-AI collaboration improves tone and impact
- Mid-poem twists recapture attention
- Irony and humour increase emotional depth
Client Value & Integration
For educators, creators, and organisations exploring AI literacy, this case study proves how storytelling can bridge technical and emotional understanding. It shows that AI content doesn't need to be cold, technical, or long-it can be human, poetic, and less than 30 seconds.
